Scott Smith began working part-time at The Springs before moving into a full-time role as activities director. He’s been with The Springs for over 10 years. Smith grew up in the Philippines where his parents were Christian missionaries. When he began looking at colleges, Smith was interested in going to school in the South since his parents were from South Carolina. He earned his undergraduate degree in education from Samford University and says he loved his time at Samford because they had a large student population of “MKs” (missionary kids). Before coming to work at The Springs, Smith taught physical education classes as well as high school social studies and history classes. He also worked with the YMCA as sports director. Smith enjoys providing residents at The Springs with opportunities to play and to compete with one another and with outside groups. The Spring Chickens compete against church groups or other organizations in games. One of Smith’s favorite activities with residents is taking them on joy rides throughout Greenville County. The residents often recall stories of their past while on these joy rides, and Smith likes hearing their stories. In fact, Smith says the best part of his job is being able to laugh, joke, and converse with the residents who have become a second family for him.
